On the proposed 10% tax on mobile phone recharges

My view, which is in line with industry position: This is the wrongest time to introduce such a tax. It's an additional burden on Nigerians, who are already paying heavily on many other things due to the recession.

The telecoms industry has remained the only one, perhaps, that has consistently dropped prices while others, including Gala, have taken price increases. Telecoms powers virtually every other aspect of our daily lives and to tax the consumption, as if it's an article of ostentation, will not be the right thing to do.

I'd rather advocate 10% tax on luxury mobile phones and give further incentives to telcos to further democratize the enabler which seems to be the only true dividend of democracy in Nigeria.
